Lawrence, a complete consummate
musician, vocalist, songwriter, arranger, producer and recording engineer, uses
his five-octave-range vocals to resonate with the influences of David Ruffin,
Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye.
Straight ahead songs and vocals,
that's Lawrence's
intention and style: creating and performing songs that have distinction
and melody, that speak to his joy, passions and sensibilities. The bass
parts he plays are tailored to synergistically match his guitar
arrangements. And, when he covers a song it's a song he truly loves and
has lived with for some time.
This passionate music professional
constantly improves the craft. The guitar's influence in music, in
particular traditional R&B, has always intrigued him. While he concurs
that the bass may be considered the heart of R&B, he recognizes the guitar
as its je ne sais quoi (that intangible something). All parts -- guitar, vocal bass and drums --
have to feel right. He creates music the
way he does his paintings -- create, step back, look, listen, then back to it.
Lawrence believes that a song is an institution -- a marriage of
lyrics and music. He honed his song writing abilities by studying under
the tutelage of Arthur Hamilton (“Cry Me a River”) and Annette Tucker ("Muskrat
Love") when they selected his portfolio to participate in their one-on-one
thirteen-week workshop.
"All
my life I have never questioned I would be doing music. Everything else
felt like a chore. My desire has always
been to create music as art that appeals to a person’s thoughts, emotions and
feelings through their listening sensory. When music is taken in
primarily through an audio experience listeners see their imagination, landscape
and characters that excite their individual enjoyment. I would rather people listen to my music than
read about me.” (L.C.M.)
